So dig into microphone or radio and find an audio coupling capacitor in
the transmitter. Take it out and put on in that is half its size. That
will double the roll off frequency for the bass.

Close talking in a noisy situation does improve the signal to ambient
noise from the microphone.

Or adjust the BFO setting to be further from the corner of the transmit
(and probably the receive) filter. That will also improve the carrier
suppression.
