Bob, for any mike you use, talk ACROSS it not directly into it, especially
modern hand mikes.
The Heil is designed for close talking, it is less gain than other cheap
mikes purposely to not have background noise.
There is another Astatic old mike good for SSB, the 10d or similar, dynamic
element. Bullet shaped, it sits on same desk stand as D104, if you can find
a head of that Astatic model.
Heil suggests for too bassy mikes, with your voice, to place a disk of
cardboard behind the element, to restrict back vents if present. The D104
does not have back venting, so sounds good for communications. A music mike
is not what you want for SSB.
