I spoke to Garland at Ten Tec this morning about the Corsair PTO. It
turns out that (very reasonably) the temperature compensating cap is
tack soldered to the "bottom" of the board (the part easily exposed in
the PTO case, thank goodness). I can mess with it now. He did mention
that the varactors, if replaced, should be exact replacements. He also
mentioned a "yellow" 2200 cap in the PTO's that were sometimes flakey
and could be replaced with mica equivalents for improvement (he said
that they don't have any there but if I could find the mica version I'd
be better off). All very good information if your Corsair has
unacceptable drift from the PTO.
Garland also mentioned that age affects all the components and it might
just be a hard problem to fix:
I am very lucky, Steve has a spare PTO that is coming to my house. This
project is now mainly for learning, my Corsair should have another PTO
soon.
