John, you need a lot of help! Didn't your 'elmer' ever tell you that if you
have a properly constructed wire antenna, that a crow can't sit on it? Most
everyone knows that the construction of a good wire antenna includes a
generous helping of 'chicken fat' on the wire, and of the obvious correct
color. As W9TO, W9WBL, KB0PB, and other elmers taught us, the color of the
chicken-fat that you apply to antenna wire strictly depends on the speed at
which you send CW. 10-20wpm is supposed to be ice-blue, 20-30wpm = pink,
30-40wpm = orange (not just a 'dot' either), 40-50wpm = red, and above 60wpm
= fire-engine red. I think if you go back and finish, with proper
construction, your wire antenna, you will never have the chance to build
that fire.
A good elmer can certainly help you with your other questions also.
It is very unfortunate that KB0PB is now a silent key. For I certainly would
recommend him as an elmer for you. Frank had one of the best bug fist I've
ever copied. I was once in his shack and as I was trying to be most helpful
to the old-timer, I started to readjust his bug for him. Where upon he
pointed out the shack window and said "Tom, do you see that mound of dirt
out there in the back yard?" When I acknowledged the mound of dirt, I asked
Frank what the heck it was, he very calmly told me "It's the grave of the
last smart-a** ham who came into my shack and started readjusting my bug."
Frank was very helpful like that. He certainly could help you with your amp
questions too.
