Not just spammers spoof.
I had some hassles recently with the Harris Poll people (which I finally
resolved by blocking all of their incoming email at the ISP, which is
another story). At one point, I went and registered a few complaints on
their web site. The replies I got back had a faked email address.
How do I know? Because the Harris Poll doesn't use the ARRL.NET email
servers.
Unfortunately, when I tried to get ahold of someone up at HQ to see if they
wanted to follow up on it, their web master (via my contact) dismissed it
out of hand as either a spammer or a virus spoof -- never bothered to read
the details. So it goes. Pity, if it were me, I'd have a lawyer start
talking to Harris -- and yes, I'm sure it's their real site!

The recent virus spoof originating addresses so what you see is probably
not where they came from. Careful digging in the detailed headers can
sometimes discover at least what server they came from, not necessarily
what ISP user. Fussing at the described originating address is now
mostly futile because of that spoofing.
On a similar vein, much spam sending software creates destination
addresses by starting with a huge list of e-mail names (e.g. the part
before the @ sign) and server url (the part after the @ sign) and sends
to addresses made up using every e-mail name and every server url. Many
bounce. Some don't. Those that don't bounce probably get moved to
"verified" direct e-mail mailing lists.
