I had such a problem. The trouble was caused by the guy wires on my tower.
Over time a coating formed on the tower, preventing good contact with the
guy wires. What that seemed to do was to mix AM broadcast signals and
radiate them and their intermodulation products up into the ham bands.
Others told me to look for poor electrical connections on gutters,
downspouts, etc.
