i learned scientific method and statistics while getting a masters.
peer review is a good thing. your points are well taken but let me
share another perspective: lab specs are great, but what about their
cummulative real-world effect? how many more stations will radio A
  hear over radio B?

given brake horsepower and curb weight which car is faster? which
spec means more? there is no substitute for real-world quarter-mile
times where tire adhesion, engine power band, shifting, aerodynamics,
etc. are also taken into account concurrently.

Not to mention one of the most important factors; the driver's abilities and
proficiencies, or lack of, to operate it at its highest efficiency under all
the different prevailing circumstances of every moment!
