One step further, looking at the diagrams in the new manual I get little
confused:
Wonder if it is the cause of some audio problems reported earlier.
Page 9 shows Figure 2-3 Front view, mic connector - 4 pins are fine, marked 1
- 4.
There is a dot indicating connection to the body of connector, not marked.
Schematic doesn't show any connection to the body of connector, but there is
connection to the chassis gnd.
Page 10 shows Figure 2-4 Microphone wiring for Orion.
Appears mike connector with corresponding numbering of pins is wired to some
kind of microphone? Box showing MIC ELEMENT and PTT. Pin 4 supposed to +9VDC
is wired to case (grounded?) and PTT common contact. Pin 3 to PTT N/O. What is
that supposed to be? (How not to wire? :-) I have no problem with mike wiring.
Figure 2-5 Proper mic cable wiring, shows connections between (what?)
MICROPHONE and TRANSCEIVER.
PTT wire goes between pins 3 on both connectors, 4 is free.
Then we have pins 1 and 2 cross wired between two connectors. Why? Pin 2 is
supposed to be ground and normally tied to the ground on radios and mikes or
could be floating at the microphone, with case/body tied to the ground
connection at the mike or cable connector.
Then we have shield of the cable connected only to the body of connectors.
How do you provide connection to the shield? Just clamp it at the connector
body? That is not a good practice, things corrode, loosen up. If there was
solder
connection to the body of connector, then its OK, but those 4 pin connectors
do not have solder lug for the body. Not very good practice, prone to
problems. MIKE connector body seems to be connected to radio's GND.
So what is it, messed up diagrams or any special reason for it?
I used my old OMNI VI adapter from 4 pin connector to two dingles, one for
Heil mike connection wired between pin 1 and 2 (gnd, shield) and one for PTT
between pin 3 and 2 (gnd, shield). Now I can send CW with my foot using PTT/CW
"feature" :-)
I am asking here first, in case I am off the rocker, before I bother busy
people at TT.
