I remember in the mid-60's the Old Crusts were opining that Silly Side band would never catch on because hams wouldn't spend the money to get new equipment. At the time, a modest station, say a Heath DX60 transmitter with an outboard VFO (AM/CW) and HR10 receiver cost about $200. That was 1/10 the cost of a new car.
