Yes, I agree. As long as you tailor your bandwidth to band
utilization (wide when the band is empty, narrow when band is
crowded), then I don't have any problem with wideband
SSB. After all, nobody is lobbying to kick AMers off the
bands (talk about spectrum hogs), and we could do a lot
more for spectrum utilization efficiency if people would
clean up their IMD spurs. I heard one guy calling in the
TO4E pileup the other day whose signal was so dirty that
he was covering the TO4E station even though he was
calling up 10 KHz. Except for the FT1000MP MK V
in class A mode, the manufacturers don't help as most of
the rigs being sold have fairly lousy TX IMD performance.
Then people run these mediocre exciters into amplifiers
that are mistuned or have poor IMD and the result is
wideband SSB without the pleasure of hi-fi audio
(its like getting screwed without getting kissed). I think
the widebanders that ran afoul of Riley H. were being
obstinate about running their wide signals on crowded
bands like 20 and 17 during high traffic periods. IMHO,
they were bucking for what they got from Riley..
