Some of those among us with graying and/or thinning hair may remember of
W4EGK, Joe Batchelor. Joe was the lead engineer at Central Electronics,
who's noted for the design and development of the broadband couplers used
in the 600L HF amplifiers and the later 100V/200V broadband HF
transmitters. In addition to his work at Central Electronics, Joe Batchelor
is also listed in Who's Who for his work in the development of a radio
system designed to locate downed pilots at sea for the Air Force back in
the mid-forties. Joe Batchelor passed away Sunday January 4, 2004.
Several years ago Joe suffered a very debilitating stroke. What a loss to
those of us that enjoy the pioneering efforts of this giant of a ham and
engineer. Joe and his wife of over sixty years, W4EZS, Jackie lived east of
the Atlanta, Georgia area for many years. Their home was an old school
house which was filled with numerous work benches stacked with test
equipment and projects. I once had the privilage of visiting the school
house and the "Intersanctum" of Joe's world and mind. That day will be
forever etched into my mind.
For a very limited virtual tour of the school house and Joe Batchelor's
"Intersanctum" point your browser to:
