Yes, you are missing something ;-)

  Besides switching bands on amplifiers, there are numerous
accessories which need to be band switched (e.g., remote antenna
switches and external bandpass filters).  There are also 3rd
party boxes available to convert the ORION's switching scheme
(open collector) to other typical switching schemes.

See MICROHAM, Dunestar, etc.

Also, I seem to recall that the Ten-Tec Transistorized amps could
be band switched externally.

I haven't received my Orion yet and maybe  when it arrives it
will be evident, but what is the purpose of the band data
connectors? None of TT's amps have the capability and as far as I
know, they aren't any interfaces to allow you to use other
manufacturers amps that have auto track feature. Am I missing
something?
