Just for reference, here is the first sentence from the Alpha 99 manual
about the ALC connection:

        "The use of external ALC is not normally needed or recommended
when the ALPHA 99 is used with modern transceivers."  Then there is a
paragraph describing the ALC levels provided, along with  how to adjust
it, and then the final sentence:  "We recommend contacting CrossLink
customer service before attempting to use external ALC with the 99."
