Ken, that's meaningless. Sorry. My mic worked first time right out of the
box too. But suddenly on certain bands in the middle of CQWW contest I had
RF in the audio, big time! The contest was the first time I had tried to
work all bands with a linear.

It's all a question of environment, especially the relationship of where the
antenna is, related to the shack.

Eric has a worst case scenario that many of us here in Europe have. The
antenna is center-fed on a mast sticking out of the roof of the house, and
the shack is just a few feet below it. You have a less than perfect ground
and lots of RF in the air.

I had problems too, but I was able to cure them with some standard means of
removing RF from the equipment (I used a quarterwave counterpoise on the
band troubling me).

When I dissected my mic (shure 444) I found that only one of the two mic
wires is shielded, and the mic- and PTT Gnd are tied together. Still, it
worked OK right out of the box - initially.

The previous email restating what Paul Clinton distributed is worth its
weight in Gold. I highly recommend everybody check their mics and if
necessary, rewire them as Paul suggests. That's what I'm doing tonight.

Still, thanks for you interest and comments, Ken. I appreciate everyone who
tries to help.

No, not on my Orion. The 705 worked first time out but my Goldline GM-5
needed to be rewired.

Am I reading all this right ? If you buy the Orion and the matching mic,
you
need to re-wire the radio or mic before it will work properly ?

  Tnx
