I remember the complex procedure when I was a novice and used an old NC-100
receiver.
1. Turn tuning until you hear hams.
2. Call CQ there.

Sounds good in theory Steve, I tried that one early Sunday morning. Heard a
VE3 calling CQ on SSB. After a couple of tries and nobody answered, I
thought I'd say "Hello."

"VE3 bla bla bla, this is W8KC calling..."

"Uh... W8KC... check your frequency."

7.161 on the Corsair's digital display.

Opps.

So even the digital displays can lead to trouble if the brain is disengaged,
as mine is more and more.
