I guess the word "need" needs to be defined.
Of course he does not "need" 10 GB, but I personally wouldn't install a
second operating system on my computer unless I had 10 GB to spare. After
all, if I bother to install it, I'll probably want to use it and 10 GB can
fill up pretty fast with multi media user data.
Knoppix is the same CD-runable Linux we have here and it's great for getting
your feet wet. For the real thing, I use SuSE.

Why does he need 10GB? The aforementioned Damn Small
Linux fits into 50MB. With all the extensions we are
talking a few hundred MB. Vector Linux is another
relatively lightweight distro that fits neatly onto a
single CD. My ancient Toshiba Libretto SS1010 has
only a 2.1GB hard drive and it is running Fedora Core
3 just fine. I don't install the kitchen sink, just
what I need.

Many, many, many such things, including Knoppix, Damn
Small Linux, Feather Linux, Mandrake Move, Gentoo Live
CD, etc... Running from CD and RAM can be quite slow,
though.
