The Corsair is a fine radio, except it is very limited in split freq operation (+/- about 2 kHz with RIT, as I remember) without the hard to find external VFO. The Omni V (and VI) have built in dual VFO functionality that avoids that issue. So I'd say the Omni V is far more useful than the Corsair if split frequency operation is ever contemplated. That's why I got rid of my Corsair after many years as a satisfied user - I couldn't find a VFO for it!

In addition, the near in dynamic performance of the Omni V can be upgraded to Orion-like specs with the addition of the InRad roofing filter mod (see my review in Feb 05 QST and http://www.qth.com/inrad/.) The table below is from George's web site and shows the improvement he has measured with the Omni VI (V should be similar). This will make a big difference in contest or DX chasing performance.

Tone Spacing OEM 600 Hz filter
2400Hz filter

2 kHz 79 dB 94 dB 85.5 dB
5 kHz 82.5 97 95.5
10 kHz 86.5 98 96.5
20 kHz 95 97.5 97.5

Hi and if you can't get a Corsair, try an
Omni V. With all the filters, itis equal to the Corsair.

Hi, Ron, and everyone else,
I do agree the 516 has tighter skirt and the guys in
the club was really surprise a "QRP" radio by "Ten Tec" really outperform the TS570 by Kenwood.
The emphasis on the names were intentional. These
guys think TT is a toy and the far east radios are "real" man radios. (heh heh, what ever that means...)

It means they made judgements without the benefit of
experience. As a woman I'll be happy not to have some
of the really crappy "far east real man radios" out
there. It's nice not being a "real man" or any kind
of man at all sometimes :)

An Elecraft K2 would blow the doors of their little
Kenwood too. Do they think it's a toy as well?
I plan on going for, at minimum, a Paragon with
proper filters, to a maximum of Omni 6.

Is general coverage important? If not please look at
the ARRL lab test results for the Corsair. They are
better than those for the Paragon and a fully loaded
Corsair with lots of filters will cost you less. Indeed, in some categories the Corsair receiver is
still in the top 10 radios ever tested.
