I'm new to the list, but not new to TenTec. Well actually, I may have
been on the list 5 or 6 years ago but I don't recall.
I run mainly (not exclusively) CW and enjoy QRP. I've been a ham off
and on for 30 years and am just returning after a 5 year QRT period. It
seems in my 30 years I've ALWAYS been QRT during sunspot cycle peaks and
then active during valleys. Here we go again.
I am about to receive a new-used Omni V and am wondering about filters.
A couple of questions:
1. 9 MHz vs 6.3 MHz filters: IIRC, the first IF is 9 MHz so the 9 MHz
filter will perform more like a roofing filter than the 6.3 MHz filter
will. So I assume the 9 MHz filter will produce greater benefit to
dynamic range than the 6.3 will. True? If I had only one narrow filter
is it better to have it in the 9 or 6.3 MHz position?
2. Which filters are the ones to pick for CW use? I assume 500 Hz at 9
MHz and both 500 and 250 Hz in the 6.3 MHz position. How about 1.8 KHz
at 9 MHz and 500 & 250 at 6.3?
4. TenTec's 250 Hz filters are 6 pole. Inrad's are 8 I believe. Why
did TenTec not use 8 poles? I assume to reduce ringing & overall
attenuation.
5. Are the TenTec filters OK or should I really go Inrad? I recall
with my prior TenTecs (Omni D & Corsair II) having more leakage around
the filter than I wanted. I assume an Inrad filter would have less but
that's an assumption.
I'm finding there is a real problem with TenTec rigs. I can't stop at
just one. I have an Omni V on the way and I'm *still* wanting a Corsair
II, Century 22 and of course the new Argonaut V and Orion II. *Sigh*
