Hi Ken, I started out as K1QCF in 1961 with an RCA AR88 and a BC 610 and don't remember if it had an S meter or not. For the last 25 or so years I have been repairing mostly Collins and do use the S meters during alignment. As a rule I keep the rf gain on my Paragons at mid scale and rely on my ears to hear the signals. The masking tape might be a little extreme. IMHO this whole deal on S meter is a lot of nit picking a fine radio.
