Thanks also for the tip on putting  the  battery in a bag.

As I think more about the Paragon battery issues, the following come to 
mind:

In a pinch, an alkaline battery could be used, if you make up an adapter 
cable with a diode in series with it to prevent charging current from 
going into the battery.

Maybe it would be better to relocate the battery outside the 
transceiver. There is a place on the back for an RS-232  connector, if 
that option is installed. One could fabricate a new cover plate with a 
jack on it to connect to an external battery. This would also allow for 
a bigger battery pack.
