Hi Don,

Both the Paragon and Paragon II utilize crystal filters whereas the Argo
V use DSP filters. The advantage of this for the Argo is that you have
many filter widths available at the turn of a knob. The disadvantage is
that the skirts don't seem as sharp to me on the Argo. Both the Argo and
Paragons use most of the keys for double functions utilizing a second
menu key. The Argo has an auto-notch utilizing the DSP algorithms and
the Paragons have a manual notch. The manual notch can be used on CW
whereas the auto notch can't. The Argo V has a "Multi" knob that
controls several functions essential to use the rig. This requires
selecting the proper mode for various controls and can be clumsy. The
Paragons have only one function for each pot. The current requirements
for the Argo are reduced so the power supply size is also smaller. To
me, the CW is more pleasant to listen to on the Paragon than the Argo
over an extended session. I'm not sure why that is and it could be just
my perception. The Argo V does not have an RF gain control which hampers
reception in heavy static. (You can't bring the RF gain down to mask the
QRN below the receiver threshold. The Argo also does not have a DSP based
noise reduction to hide QRN.) The Paragons have the ability to key the
frequency desire using the keypad, the Argo doesn't. The Argo has a
built-in keyer, the Paragons don't. The Argo is a "software defined
radio" and features can be implemented via a download from the
mothership. The Paragons can't. The Paragons will receive from 100 kHz
to 30 mHz, the Argo from 500 kHz to 30 mHz. Both offer the typical
Ten-Tec silky-smooth QSK. As the feller says........"you pays your money
and you makes your choice!"
