A PTO is a permeability tuned oscillator. The frequency of the
oscillator is adjusted by moving a slug in and out of the core of an
inductor. The inductance is adjusted by changing the overall effective
permeability of the core, (part of the core is air and part is the metal
slug. The effective permeability is something between the permeability
of air and the permeabilty of the slug material.)
I doubt that satisfactory results could be had using a moving contact on a roller inductor for a VFO. Ken N6KB hi The Scout WAS the last PTO radio. The VFO used a roller inductor (or something similar to it). and the oscillato was PTO. |
