I agree that the 1/2 S-unit is a marginal benefit at best.
Some amps won't drive to the legal limit with only 100W in. Or maybe it has
to do with getting a full 2500 watts PEP out of those capable amps if you
have a bit more than 100 watts to drive it. Of course, we're still in the
range of 1/2 S-unit or less. So it is a bit of a head scrather :-)>>>

I've made qsos with 200 w. PA that would not have happened or lasted as long
with a 100 w. rig. I don't measure dBs, i just have my experience.
Of course you also have a higher average with a 200 w. PA but more
important, you can dial it back for a cooler cleaner run, and as Grant
mentioned, drive a cathode driven grounded grid triode amp to full output.
Regardless of what Ten Tec says, my Centurion needs around 110 to 120 w. on
some bands for full output.
The standard reply from the power naysayers at this point is usually "so
what, no one notices the difference between 1.2 kw and 1 kw" and you know
what, you're right, but I paid $2100 for a 1.2 kw amp; if I wanted a 900 w.
amp I would have saved some money and bought an AL80B.
