In order to get FCC accepted the radio had to be made in such a way it won't
transmit anywhere. It also had to be made so it wouldn't act as a scanner.
This is the reason for the firmware in the Flex 5K, in order to provide the
security required by the FCC for type acceptance. The firmware can be opened
up if you have the proper authorization such as for MARS operation or
governmental use. The DSP in the flex consists of the QSD AD/DA and PowerSDR
software. There is no longer a prosumer "soundcard" involved because the radio
in fact has a far more high performance DSP. The DSP is still under control
of PowerSDR.
In fact there are several version of personally modified PowerSDR that are
maintained by individuals who are experiemnting with the code that are
maintained on the Flex SVN. The code is still open source, and the SDR-1000
and the Flex 5000 still share the same code. It will be interesting to see how
the new radio plays.
