Hi John,

I was a Red Hat enthusiast for a while, because that's
the distro that we used when I was getting my
UNIX/Linux systems administration certification. 
After some problems with the last two versions and
64-bit CPUs, though, I tried Ubuntu, and now have it
on three machines at home.  I would highly recommend
Ubuntu for   a newcomer to Linux.  The install is easy
to follow, and even configures tricky devices like
wireless cards.

Once you install Ubuntu, go to System -> Synaptic
Package Manager and you will see a category for
amateur radio.  That should get you started.
