You can build AB or B amps from single or multiple devices. AB or B
class amps don't have to be paired.
The AB or B just refers to how the are switched on during the cycle.
Just having one device will increase the harmonic distortion but it
won't affect the IMD.
The LPF will "fill in" the signal when it removes the second and
higher harmonics. But the part of the cycle that is amplified will be
linear amplified.
A good reason to use a balanced pair of devices is to reduce the
harmonic distortion by suppressing the second (and all other even
harmonics) by a large (-30db or more) amount. This makes designing
the output LPF a bit easier too.
And it means you can use two smaller devices for the same output.
