Many brands other than Ten-Tec have an ALC output on the amplifier,
which is intended to connect to an ALC input on the exciter
(transceiver). This ALC is an attempt to prevent overdrive of the PA. It
seems like every manufacturer made their own standard for the ALC
voltage level and polarity and probably time constants too, so there is
no standard. Presumably if the transceiver and amplifier came from the
same manufacturer, it would work right. In some cases there are ALC
output adjustments on the PA or ALC input sensitivity adjustments on the
transceiver. Ten -Tec apparently expects the owners of their equipment
to adjust the exciter output properly to prevent overdrive, rather than
using ALC.
