Terry, just for reference, I have been using an Omni VI+ for about a
week now on cw and have never noticed anything odd about the sidetone.

Is this a typical Omni problem or could you have a bad component?

You might try the following.... set the rf gain down to about 75% or so,
agc on fast, and run the sidetone volume at 15 and see what it sounds
like.
