I just received my Dad's old Omni V back from TenTec and the audio is
now working beautifully. I have N4PY's .92 chip in it and it is a
pleasure on CW. I also have the Inrad 9mHz 2.4 & 250 filters and an
Inrad 250 kHz 6.3 mHz filter. The rest of the filter banks are filled
with TenTec's filters.
I'm pleased with the audio and selectivity/sensitivity the V has now
as before it was lacking. The noise blanker still does not remove
what seems like a power line buzz on 80M as well as the Corsair
blanker does. That noise does stop around 2AM EST.
With this new radio back and seeing as it has Carl's .92 chip in it,
I'm wondering if there's much of a difference as regards CW with the
Omni V & V+ units? I'm not much on SSB & probably never will be and
as regards contesting, I don't band hop much, I like to glean what's
available on a band & then go on to the next band so memories are of
no real interest to me. Great selectivity is important to me and so
is sensitivity.
I've never had the opportunity to A/B an Omni VI or VI+ before or for
that matter to even use one in the first place and now that I have
this V back and sounding the way it should, I'm wondering if the VI
or the VI+ are any better then the v as regards CW.
If there's a marked improvement in faint signal copy with the VI or
VI+ I'd like to know that. Faint cw signals are what I still thrill
to copy clearly.
Also, considering the filters I have in here at the moment, is there
any benefit to the Inrad roofing filter for CW, I could use the
processor button to engage it. As it is now, engaging the MT button
inserts the 9mHz 250Hz Inrad, I assume the roofing filter would also
be in line. I don't want ringing.
Great thoughts & ruminations from the Clan?
