"The manual notch is outside of the receiver's AGC loop. The result is that
notching a strong CW signal leaves the desired weak CW signal in the mud
because the AGC voltage is derived from the stronger signal. Firmware CANNOT
fix this problem."

The V1 code manual notch for the Orion does remove the carrier from
the passband and therefore it does not effect the AGC. The change
in the V2 code was a decision by Ten-Tec. The logic was never made clear.
There was a "comment" from Ten-Tec about noise, but the ARRL tests
with the Orion were with V1 code - with the notch removing the carrier - and
the ARRL found NO noise issues. Frankly, the Notch change seemed to be
more associated with Ten-Ten using some of the DSP code design from
the Jupiter for the Orion II and less about any "side effects."
