The bulbs should be 6.3 volt types. Sometimes these get replaced with 12v bulbs by mistake.
And sometimes they get replaced with higher voltage bulbs intentionally, to make them last longer. Mouser, Digikey, Allied and others who sell Chicago Miniature lamps, or similar brand, have a large variety of lamps, which will fit the bayonet socket, available. Choosing the next higher voltage available will give a bit less light and a lower temperature, so the spectra will tend more towards the red end, and the bulb will last much longer.
