For PSK, RTTY {AFSK} and other digital modes, I have successfully used the
Omni VI Plus and the Omni VII with only direct connections between the radio
and the computer. There is no interface, transformers or pads in my system
between the computer and radio. I've always used the input & output
connections on the rear. I've always adhered to the idea that "if it is not
a mike, do not connect it to the mike input". Besides levels, there are
other reasons for this approach. Yes, one must watch the levels such that
ALC is not active. This usually nets a power output in the 40 to 50 watt
range with good results. Also, never use any Speech Processing in the
radio. For RX/TX switching, the VOX in these radios properly adjusted
handles the task without fail.

A fan blowing on the heat sink does keep the radio cooler at these power
levels and is advised. A small CPU cooling fan operated from the 13.8 volt
connector on the rear is easy to deal with and does the job.
