For PSK, RTTY {AFSK} and other digital modes, I have successfully used the Omni VI Plus and the Omni VII with only direct connections between the radio and the computer. There is no interface, transformers or pads in my system between the computer and radio. I've always used the input & output connections on the rear. I've always adhered to the idea that "if it is not a mike, do not connect it to the mike input". Besides levels, there are other reasons for this approach. Yes, one must watch the levels such that ALC is not active. This usually nets a power output in the 40 to 50 watt range with good results. Also, never use any Speech Processing in the radio. For RX/TX switching, the VOX in these radios properly adjusted handles the task without fail.

A fan blowing on the heat sink does keep the radio cooler at these power levels and is advised. A small CPU cooling fan operated from the 13.8 volt connector on the rear is easy to deal with and does the job.

It seems straight forward. Also can run fsk from the i/o. I have a friend
who does not use an interface. He uses the software whatever in and out of
the radio to cumputer. He uses abt 50 watts no overdrive watching the ALC of
course. He said TT told him that was the way to work PSK AFSK out of i/o.
I'm putting my Orion back together from reinstalling ATU. I made a metal fan stand and hooking up my own cumputer fan. I believe you would have to have a
fan to run FSK RTTY. Could get hot.I recently retired for the 2nd time. I
got a bunch of equipment to put on repair table.Back to other. I bet the
interface would be rite handy on rfi, gnd loops and whatnot. Some of the
newer rigs are an accident waiting to happened. I have a R390a reciever I
need to align.Thats my RTTY rx coming in to the Orion. Maybe can help.

Hi Folks....

Anyone going straight from AUX I/O to computer for working PSK? If so,
please email me off-line.
