I second your thought on this subject Geoff.  Depending on the age of the 
person, us older folks seem to adapt better to the analog gadgets. After 
all, that's what we were brought up with.  I have graduated to a  SDR radio 
but the learning curve is much steeper.  An older Omni series 545 thru 546C 
or Corsair 560/561 along with the Triton would be a great starter for a 
newbie.
Just my 2 cents worth.
