Ron, Martin's suggestion is exactly how I've been running all my Ten Tec
gear since the arrival of my Corsair II 22 years ago. All with excellent
results
I might add. I regurarly get complimentary reports on speech quality and
readability when on SSB.
I'm currently using an Orion classic and operate it just same as the Corsair
II. I can operate at any power level with full ALC stabilization from a few
watts to full power. I have an AL 80A which requres about 70 or 80 watts
drive and a Hercules II which requires about 40 watts drive or so. All I have
to do when switching between amps or running barefoot is swizzle the front
panel PWR control to get the power I desire. That sets the ALC level to
what is required at the moment. Easily and quickly done.
If you have the ALC led flashing on voice peaks, you have full output for the
ALC setting selected.
Talk power now becomes a matter of voice quality, microphone, processing
etc. but not transmitter peak power.
For 20 years or more I considered this one of Ten Tec's strengths, among
many.
