Ralph -- mine does the same thing occasionally.  Appears that frequency
counter is not getting the signal from the PTO (that may not be technically
correct.. .don't hold me to it).  My solution is to tap the front panel with
my finger.  Good sharp tap, but not enough to break it... Seriously, works
every time.

Proper solution is probably to open it up and reseat a board or two.

Give it a shot.
