Martin,
Did you do the resets that John recommends? Here is what I have from an
earlier email. Note that he recommends two Master Resets. I thought I had a
problem with X11, but I then went back and did the resets and all is well
now.

When updating to V2.064x11, it is recommended that after you upgrade
the firmware, that you turn the rig off, and perform a RAM Clear reset
followed by a master reset and clear user memories and filter
settings.
RAM clear is as follows:
1. Orion off, power supply on.
2. Press and hold the LCK button just below the VFO B knob.
3.Turn on Orion and continue to hold the LCK button until Master Reset is
displayed on the screen. BATTERY FAILURE may also be displayed, disregard.
4. Release the LCK button and allow the Orion to boot to 14.250.
5. Turn the Orion Off and perform the Master Reset using The MAIN RX/TX
button. User memories and filter settings MUST be cleared.
THEN perform a Master Reset.

So far I'm liking the latest 565 release but another observation, other than
the one I noted earlier about the strange behaviour with the PBT and BW
displays not updating properly, is where the sweep display every 20 seconds
or so acts like it got hit with a very big signal on lots of frequencies, a
line appears every 1/8" or so across the display from the baseline all the
way to the top of the screen and then disappears, does not affect the audio
in any way. Not noticed it before but never really used the sweep until this
release, may not be wonderful but quite usable other than the odd behaviour.
It looks to me as if the display has been 'brightened' up. Had to turn the
contrast all the way down to 35% from the default 50%. Still some rough
edges on the frequency numbers but maybe limits of the screen resolution,
what is it anyway?
I can think of a bunch of other stuff I'd like to see done with the display,
no I'm not expecting it to happen, but I can hope, HI HI!
I think it sounds a lot nicer. I've long felt DSP radios sound harsh in
comparison to analogue radios, I have a TS940 next to the Orion and still
like the way it sounds but I think this release is the best yet n that
department. It may not be perfect but it does sound smoother to me.
Until this update I had been using 1.373b5 (I think) and now miss the way
the S meter tracked the DSP NR and also how much better I think the software
NB worked. Still I think I will stick with this latest version for the other
improvements.

Hello Dean,
The latest updates of the Orion and Orion II both utilize the RF AGC system.
It was the first utilized in both rigs before we added the capability to
select between the AF AGC or RF AGC. Just a note, all other TenTec radios,
588, 538, 599, etc utilize the RF AGC system.
Just a reminder for many:
AF AGC.
It did not permit the use of many of the DSP functions, e.g. auto notch, and
had a lot of negative side effects that would require quite a bit more
horsepower to resolve. Or at least quite a bit more work to make AF AGC and
the other DSP receiver enhancement functions to work properly. The real
reason it was created, we will look to see how we can provide that featuring
without having to select from two different times at which AGC processing
occurs.
The Waterfall Display.
For the moment, it was pulled out of the latest Orion and Orion II releases
so that we could get the both firmware sets to a very stable and usable
frame to build upon.
We do intend on bringing the waterfall display back for the Orion II once
the firmware has been used for a while and its real stability determined.
Not really sure it could be visibly useful on an monochrome Orion 565.
Thanks,
John Henry
