The best "trick" is to order a new dial cord from Ten-Tec.
They are cheap, and very easy to replace. Cost peanuts.

Seems to me I remember an old time fix for dial cord problems. It was
some talcum powder placed on the drum that rolls up the cord. Probably
was for slipping dial cords, but maybe someone else will comment if they
know of the trick.
