I have to admit that spending less on a radio and more on antennas is the
smartest thing anybody can do.

I also feel similar to Barry about radio with upward conversion IF (or vhf IF,
as Barry called it). However, of all the radios on the market with upward
conversion, the OM VII is probably the best and certainly MORE than good enough
for normal ham use. Only the most serious contester in the busiest of contests
would be slightly unhappy with the OM VII.
If you are not in that category, then don't worry about the upward conversion
of the OM VII.

I joined this thread late and don't know why the Eagle was not considered on
the short list.
I have had 3 Orions, 5 or 6 OMNI VI's and now have the Eagle.
I am very pleased with this radio.

The OMNI VI(+) is a fantastic radio and my only beef against it is age.
It's a wonderful radio.

Without further qualification of your individual preferences, I'd say
Orion #1 and Omni VI+ #2. Admittedly, I'm not that familiar with the
Omni VII, but I prefer radios with hf and not vhf intermediate
frequencies.

The reason I downplay the Omni VI+ is that realistically, you're going
to need to service the radio more because of its age. Also, I really
think the stock audio isn't great (but with mods, it can be). So if
you're very handy with a soldering iron and know your way around a
schematic, the Omni VI+ is a good choice.
