I use series resistors to the two hot terminals of a stereo phone jack 
for the headphones and a wirewound rear speaker fader rheostat ( Calrad 
or Philmore I think ) for the speaker. All of this in a small aluminum 
box, fed from the external speaker output of the radio. No need for an 
amplifier.
