Yes, proper RF Gain setting is crucial to narrow SAF use.  My guideline is
that you should hear a low level of "ringing" - as opposed to no ringing or
moderate ringing.

I use 20hz OR 10hz on cw - signals really pop with 10hz but settings are
more crucial.

I use SAF for weak cw AND ssb signals.  The "magic" spot I've found for ssb
is BW 2600hz, PBT +100hz, SAF 300hz width and adjust center freq for best
readability (usually 500-700hz).
