I use an SOS pad. It is a VERY fine steel wool and has soap in it. A good rinse 
with warm water afterwards cleans any dirt and residue etc. The copper is very 
shiny and soldering is a pleasure.  The pad is good for many cleanings.

Yeah... I only use the green ones on my cooking pans -very
too abrasive for this sort of thing.

As for the age of the kit board... sheesh... who knows how long TT had 
it on the shelf before sending it to me.  Based on the age and condition 
of the instruction book  (awful, crooked, and blurred copier machine 
product... no excuse for that in these days of OCR reader software and 
PDF printer drivers, but that is all I want to say negative, as I am a 
fan of the company... but not its kit instructions...)
