I too support other thoughts on the use and quantity of contact cleaners.
Too much cleaner can be a problem in many instances. I suggest spraying a
Q-Tip with the cleaner of your choice and using it to scrub the male pins of
the suspect connector. After this, exercising the female connector several
times and maybe follow with another cleaning of the male pins will usually
provide adequate wiping action thus cleaning the mating parts.
In the case of a rotary control, be it a switch or potentiometer, a small
amount applied so as not to contaminate adjacent areas is most often
adequate. Just exercise the part after applying the cleaner.

I am not being obstreperous or critical... serious question:
You guys are saying to "spray" the cleaner ... is it overkill, or
paranoid, or dumb, for me to, instead, spray the cleaner on cotton or foam
swabs, and use them to apply the cleaner to the connector pins? I don't
want to use too much cleaner or have over-spray on the board and other
parts.
Am I being too picky here... or is this a good practice?
Thanks!
