I'm spoiled.  I think if you are serious about ham radio and have the money, 
the Orion II is the most exciting, full featured, DX, CW, visually appealing, 
best supported, American made, firmware loaded, ...I could go on, but again, 
I'm spoiled....transceiver.   Now it's no longer available.  Aughhhhh.

But you are right...if the guy is into QRP mountain topping, VHF, flat out 
broke, not interested in functionality or capability, then the Orion II is not 
the answer.
