Solar activity can indeed cause this to happen. I've seen dead bands, and background noise levels peaking to S5 or higher on many occasions over the past decades. Simply switching between a resistive dummy load and outside antenna should be proof enough to show whether the noise floor is internal to the RX, or influenced by abnormal propagation... this is not rocket science.
