The Adafruit FTDI Friend is only one-half of a complete USB-to-RS232
solution as I found out recently when I tried to homebrew my own adapter to
go from a USB port to an RS232 serial port on an Elecraft K2. The FTDI
adapter chip outputs TTL-level logic which will not inter-communicate an
RS232 port.
If for someone reason you really want to build it yourself (like me), you
should be able to follow up the FTDI Friend with a level-shifter IC such as
the MAX232 (
http://www.maximintegrated.com/en/products/interface/transceivers/MAX232A.html).
My lash-up for the K2 isn't complete yet, so I can't offer real world
encouragement, but "everybody" says it should work.
