I have been using a weighted tuning knob on my Drake R8A receiver for three 
years.  It replaced the original plastic tuning knob.  As far as I can tell, 
the weighted knob has not damaged the encoder at all.  The knob looks great and 
the tuning is so smooth now.  I got the weighted knob from 73cnc.com.  It was 
not cheap, but it sure improved the looks and feel of the radio.  Joe  WS9E
