What is size of the original speaker?
I have had good results using a speaker series available from Parts Express.
They have many common sizes and they perform well
Link to page that will show some of them, the BOSS series

I dimly remember a posting many years ago by someone who replaced the
original power supply speaker with a coaxial automotive type speaker and
ended up with much better sound. I've been unable to search/locate this
post. Perhaps I'm mis-remembering.

I did find a different thread where they discussed building an internal
baffle around the back of the speaker to improve the sound. It starts
here: http://lists.contesting.com/_tentec/1998-12/msg00196.html

I'd appreciate hearing from anyone who has actually done either of these
successfully and has any additional info to share.

Thanks & 73,
