Hi,
It was the fragile and price parts that made me go for the HB-1B and
later also the MTR-3B. I had a hard time thinking about taking a $1600
radio, the way I set up the KX-3, out to sit on rocks or in places I
would never consider taking a similarly priced radio, for example a
TS-590 or Eagle.
I do think it is an extremely good idea to have two SOTA radios. One
time the HB-1B started behaving strangely. It took about three times
turning it off and on for it to go back to normal. It has never done
that again, but there is the idea that any of the small radios that
depend on a microprocessor can fail. So hehe yeah I would love to have a
KX-3, but the idea of what happens after you accidentally drop it in the
mud makes the pain a lot less if it is $300 or less.
By the way, I do remember reading that one should not put an amplifier
after the HB-1B as it might not then pass FCC requirements. So to me
that would be one excuse for taking the KX-3.

The best QRP rig out there, in my opinion, is the KX3! Had mine for 4
