Have I got this wrong then? On my Orion 1, in the Menu>Filter it
appeared to me that I could select the xtal filter bandwidth OR Auto.
I interpreted this as meaning that I could select a roofing filter
irrespective of the DSP bandwidth setting.

The Orion automatically selects the roofing filter based on DSP
bandwidth selection. Thus it assumes that a given filter is in a
particular position on the board. If you put the incorrect filter into
a slot, that function will not work properly.
