I have a Battery Tender to keep the battery in my vintage semi-retired Ford Explorer topped off. The Battery Tender really works.  For standby use, you don't want an automotive battery. Better to use a deep cycle battery.  Rather than a wet cell or gel cell, I'd suggest the "AGM"  (Absorbed Glass Mat) type battery or the LiFePO4 type.  They have  a higher energy density, though a higher cost than lead acid batteries.

Yes, some generators put out pretty ratty AC. The better ones use sine wave inverters (pure  sine wave, not the approximation that looks like a stepped square wave).

The scout will do very well at reduced power. I never run mine above 30 watts.  I ran it on a battery for Filed Day and it did very well. I  got most contacts, CW and SSB on the first call.

Not sure about size, don't know if you have much choice -- a "trickle" is a "trickle".

However, I DO know that you want a type of trickle charger called a "battery tender". This is an intelligent trickle charger that will not ultimately boil your battery dry like a conventional trickle charger. Typically about $20-25 bucks. Look up 'battery tender' on Amazon. (no connection, they just have a nice selection that will give you an idea what to look for at your neighborhood auto parts store)

Good luck!
